Excimer
Laser is an apparatus emitting high powered ultra violet beam which break
off the molecular connections of corneal cells. This procedure does not
demolish the other eye's tissues because it's only a photo-chemical process.
In
myopia,
vision
is often decreased for distance.
In
hyperopia and astigmatism,
vision
may be normal or decreased both for near and far.
To
correct the vision of these patients, spectacle or contact lenses can be
used.
The
Radial Keratotomy used in Russia
till 90's years is an old procedure during which a diamond knife cut untill
90 % of healthy cornea: for this reason, many eye surgeons ( including me )
were and are always against this procedure.
Excimer
Laser
is a new
computerized process into cornea causing 0,2 micron ablation of corneal
tissue.
For
LASIK ( Laser in situ Keratomileusis )
first, a
layer of 160 microns is taken away without loosing the contact of the cornea,
then after Excimer Laser is proceed into stromal bed of the cornea and at
the end, the leaf of 160 micron recover the cornea.
One
can understand there is no correlation between the Old Russian Radial
Keratotomy and Today's Excimer Laser / LASIK procedures.

Who
and what can be treated by Excimer Laser / LASIK ?

How
the treatement is executed ?
Eyes are
anesthetized by eyedrops and while the patient look at a red or green spot
Excimer Laser
without
blade and bloodless,
LASIK
bloodless
are
performed. Thenafter the patient may turn back at home.
How
long does it take ?
After
the preparations, Excimer Laser is finished in 10 - 50 seconds, LASIK in 3 -
4 minutes.
When
the vision is recovered ?
After
Excimer Laser, the eyes are pached for some days and then the vision of
myopic/astigmatic patients is recovered, but for hyperopic / astigmatic
patients it takes longer.
After
LASIK, the vision is ruffly recovered just after the procedure.
